Prime Minister Sobotka: EU membership is a key guarantee of our prosperity and security. It is a confirmation of our European identity

Comments made by Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka on current European issues.

If the UK leaves the EU, which I certainly do not wish to happen, it will cause a wave of nationalism and separatism across Europe. The European idea would be weakened and right-wing extremists and nationalists would sooner or later open up this issue both in the Czech Republic and other countries. I consider any suggestion of the Czech Republic leaving the EU to be completely pointless, harmful and dangerous.

EU membership is a key guarantee of our prosperity and security. It is a confirmation of our European identity and an important consequence of the Western and democratic orientation of Czech society and our country after 1989.

Reemphasizing the importance of the Czech Republic’s membership in the EU in the case of Brexit will be a major political challenge for both left-wing and right-wing democrats.
