What is a confidence vote?

The formation of a new government occurs after general parliamentary elections, when the current government files its resignation and the President of the Czech Republic names a new prime minister based on the results of the elections. At his proposal, he then names other ministers. The newly-formed government must request a confidence vote from the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic within 30 days of being named.

If more than half of MPs present in the Chamber of Deputies vote to express confidence, the government gains confidence; if not, it must file its resignation and the President of the Czech Republic entrusts another person to form a government. In the event that not even this government gains confidence, the president again entrusts a person who must form a government, but this time as proposed by the Chairman of the Chamber of Deputies. If even this third attempt fails, the President of the Czech Republic dissolves parliament and announces early elections.
