Governmental Committee for the European Union approved the mandate for the December European Council

On Wednesday, 7th December the governmental Committee for the European Union gathered in order to discuss the mandate of Prime Minister Petr Nečas for the European council´s meeting on 8th and 9th December in Brussels.

At the beginning of the session, Prime Minister Nečas introduced the material whose main points concerned the Czech Republic’s position to the amendment of founding Treaties, economic policy, situation in euro area and further enlargement of the EU and Schengen Area. The Prime Minister did not miss out the opportunity to stress how important the state of the euro area was for the Czech economy. In this connection, he also outlined the stance of the Czech Republic on respective questions about the format for Treaty change discussion.

The Committee further analysed possible solution scenarios to contemporary crisis, basic features of potential corresponding reactions and related diplomatic steps (also with respect to foreign policy of other Member States). The potential EU primary law modification, the degree of European Central Bank involvement and an increase in contribution to the International Monetary Fund were also discussed in this context. Mojmír Hampl, ČNB Vice-Governor, commented extensively on the abovementioned issues.
