On Thursday 14 July 2022, Prime Minister Petra Fiala received the Prime Minister of the Free State of Bavaria, Markus Söder, at the Kramář’s Villa. During the working lunch, they mainly discussed the strengthening of Czech-Bavarian cooperation, the modernisation of cross-border infrastructure and the current situation in the energy sector.

Both prime ministers appreciated the excellent mutual relations between the Czech Republic and the Free State of Bavaria. The two statesmen discussed mainly the possibilities of cooperation in the energy sector.

"The Prime Minister told me that the Bavarian authorities will allow an increase in the daily capacity of the TAL pipeline on Bavarian territory, which is extremely important in this difficult situation for the Czech Republic, energy policy and Czech energy security. Thanks to this decision by Bavaria, it will be possible to increase the capacity of the pipeline that brings oil from Trieste, Italy, to the Czech Republic, which helps us get rid of our dependence on Russian oil," the Prime Minister said.

"This is an important step in derussification of our economy, and it is also an example of the cooperation we talk about in Europe, which is so important at a time when we are facing such big problems as a result of Russian aggression in Ukraine. We were talking about a broader context of energy policy, energy security. We talked about the need for cooperation between European countries, European solidarity, in the event that Russian gas supplies to Europe are completely cut off," Prime Minister Fiala said.

Another topic of the meeting was cross-border infrastructure, both road, rail and data, and its necessary modernisation.

"The modernisation of the railway connection between Prague and Munich is a priority for us. On the Czech side, we have already modernised a significant part of the line between Prague and Plzeň. On the Bavarian side, electrification and modernisation will be accomplished successfully and I hope soon. This is a priority for both of our countries, as is the construction of the 5G corridor and other connections that we consider important," the Czech Prime Minister added.

The prime ministers also agreed on the need to further strengthen economic cooperation as well as cooperation in science, research and innovation, which is key to the competitiveness of the entire region. At the same time, they agreed to grant patronage to an exhibition on the Baroque in the Czech lands and Bavaria, which is being created in cooperation between the National Museum in Prague and the House of Bavarian History in Reich and will open next spring.
