Prime Minister Sobotka discusses Europe’s future with Council President Rompuy

: On 30 April 2014, Prime Minister Sobotka and President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy attended the “Ten Years of the Czech Republic in the EU” Business Forum, held at Lichtenstein Palace.

As part of the ten-year anniversary of the Czech Republic’s accession to the European Union, Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka and European Council President Herman Van Rompuy held talks. They also appeared together at the “Ten Years of the Czech Republic in the EU” Business Forum, held at Lichtenstein Palace.

At their meeting, these leaders agreed in particular on the handling of economic problems, which is a priority in support for a European social model that can even absorb economic fluctuations at times of crisis.

The meeting also covered key topics relevant to the future of European integration, such as energy policy in terms of security and climate, the renewed competitiveness of European industry and the free movement of persons, which will be the main item on the agenda of the European Council in June this year. Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka stressed that the free movement of persons is one of the Czech Republic’s main priorities and is viewed by the public as a tangible and useful benefit of European integration.

The Czech Prime Minister also assured the President Van Rompuy that, in his opinion, the positive future of the European Union lay primarily in the development of the mutual cooperation between Member States and in strengthening EU institutions so that they are able to pave a smooth path towards integration – a process that will also be affected by the results of the elections to the European Parliament.
