Prime Minister Andrej Babiš attended celebrations in Banská Bystrica on Thursday 29 August 2019 to mark the 75th anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising. The Prime Minister was accompanied by the President of the Senate Jaroslav Kubera, President of the Chamber of Deputies Radek Vondráček and Minister of Defence Lubomír Metnar.

The Prime Minister attended celebrations marking the 75th anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising. Andrej Babiš was welcomed in Banská Bystrica by the Slovak Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini. Andrej Babiš, Jaroslav Kubera and Radek Vondráček laid a wreath in honour of the soldiers who fell during the uprising. The Prime Minister considers it very important to commemorate the uprising.

“It was the largest uprising against Nazi forces during the Second World War, by 60,000 soldiers from the Slovak Army and 20,000 partisans. They included 2,000 Czechs. A veteran from the fighting in Liptovský Mikuláš, Lieutenant Colonel Josef Svoboda, is also here with us today. I believe it’s important to recall the horrors of war and the courage of those who rose up and fought for our freedom,” Andrej Babiš said.

The two Prime Ministers were then accompanied by the Slovak President Zuzana Čaputová on a tour of a museum devoted to the history of the uprising in 1944. The delegation then moved to the adjacent park for celebrations marking the anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising. During their meeting Andrej Babiš and Peter Pellegrini discussed a number of current European issues, including the forthcoming summit for the V4 Prime Ministers and their counterparts from the Western Balkans in September in Prague.
