Topolánek: EU to seek ways to strengthen democracy and security in Afghanistan

Czech Prime Minister and President of the European Council Mirek Toplánek visited Prostejov to meet the soldiers of the 601st SFG deployed in Afghanistan within the framework of the Enduring Freedom operation.

The Czech Prime Minister used this opportunity to welcome the news that the date of the presidential elections in Afghanistan has been set, and expressed its strong belief that due election process will be secured. According to Mr. Topolánek, security and order in Afghanistan, which Czech soldiers help to maintain under NATO management, are of paramount importance.

“The European Union will also continue to seek ways to improve security in Afghanistan”, said the President of the European Council in this relation, adding that “the Czech Presidency considers security to be the foundation of future democratic development in Afghanistan.”

The second round of rotation of the troops that include one hundred Czech soldiers stationed in Afghanistan is currently underway.
