Prime Minister Andrej Babiš met on Thursday, 26 April 2018, with Vice President of the Republic of Guatemala, Jafeth Ernesto Cabrera Franco. At the Office of the Government of the Czech Republic, they spoke about intensifying Czech-Guatemalan relations as well as about the political development in the region of Latin America.

The vice president of Guatemala visited the Czech Republic upon the occasion of the Ibero-American Week, organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Prague. To open the meeting, Premier Babiš appreciated the recent offer to conclude a memorandum of cooperation in economy and industry between the Czech Republic and Guatemala or the proposal of cooperation between the diplomatic academies of both countries.

Opportunities for deeper economic cooperation and the potential for enhancing trade with Guatemala lie, according to Premier Babiš, mainly in agriculture and forestry, infrastructure, transport, defence industry and healthcare.

Premier Babiš also discussed regional issues with Vice President Cabrera, including the security situation in the region of Central America, relations with the US and Latin American countries, and cooperation with the European Union. In November, Guatemala will host this year's Ibero-American Summit, i.e. a meeting of the heads of government and state of the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking nations of Europe and the Americas.
