Prime Minister Petr Nečas of the Czech Republic has sent a letter of condolence to the Prime Minister of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, Li Keqiang, in connection with the tragic earthquake in south-western China, which on Saturday deprived over 180 people of their lives while injuring more than 11,800 others and causing great material damage.

(Unofficial translation)

Your Excellency,

I was deeply moved to receive the news of the devastating earthquake in the province of Sichuan, which claimed so many victims. The might of nature still appears so great that it is not always in our power to prevent it from wasting human lives.

High commitment of all units of the rescue system is admirable and deserves respect. I wish much strength to all participants in mitigating effects of this natural disaster.

Please accept my deepest condolences on behalf of myself as well as on behalf of the Government of the Czech Republic. Our thoughts are in this difficult time with families and close ones of those who perished or were injured.

Respectfully yours,

Petr Nečas
Prime Minister of the Czech Republic
