Jan Švejnar

Senior Researcher at the Economics Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Professor of Economics

Jan Švejnar studied demography in Switzerland (at the Université de Gen?ve) and economics in the U.S.A. (at Cornell University and Princeton University), where in 1979 he received his doctorate.

He is the co-founder and the Chairman of the Executive and Supervisory Committee of the Centre for Economic Research and Graduate Education – Economics Institute (CERGE-EI). In the years 1992 to 1998 he served as the founding Director of the Economics Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, where he continues to work as a senior researcher. In 2009 he established the IDEA project (Institute for Democracy and Economic Analysis) at the Economics Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.

He has experience from working in both the profit and non-profit sectors, and has collaborated with leading politicians of all the governments since the revolution of 1989. At the present time he is also a member of the Supervisory Board of Československá obchodní banka, collaborates with a number of international institutes, and is an adviser to the World Bank.
