International Scientific Conference on (In)Tolerance in European History

In the year of the Czech presidency of the Council of the European Union, we mark the 400th Anniversary of the so-called Rudolf's Imperial Charter (1609), which confirmed the heretofore unprecedented freedom of various Christian faiths in the Kingdom of Bohemia, greatly exceeding the establishment of the religious Peace of Augsburg. The same year marks the 400 years since the death of Rabbi Yehuda Löw, one of the most important Jewish religious scholars, who with his ethical and pedagogical opinions measurably influenced even J. A. Comenius. 2009 also marks the 500th anniversary of the birth of the reformer John Calvin, whose theological legacy also strongly resonated in the environment of the Czech-founded Unity of the Brethren.

Collegium Europeaum – the joint research group of the Philosophical Faculty of Charles University and the Philosopical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, together with the Office of the Government of the Czech Republic, are hosting an international scientific conference, '(In)tolerance in European History.' The conference will take place under the auspices of the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, Ing. Jan Fischer, on Thursday 18 June 2009 in the Lichtenštejnský Palace in Prague's Malá Strana district.

Part of the conference will include a one-day exhibition of an original of Rudolf's Imperial Charter from 1609. This rare archival document is exhibited only sporadically – last during the opening of the new building of the National Archive.

The original of the Charter will be exhibited for the general public on the ground floor of the Lichtenštejnský Palace on the day of the conference, 18 June 2009, from 9:00 to 17:00.
