Personal information

Minister of Industry and Trade Jiří Cienciala was born on 10 March 1950 in Vendryně in the Moravian-Silesian Region.

Professional activity

He graduated from the field of System Engineering at VŠB - Technical University of Ostrava. He then worked for over 37 years at the Třinec Iron and Steel Works – initially in the computing department, later in production automation, and then as director of mechanical engineering development and trade.

He worked at Třinec Iron and Steel Works until the end of 2011, for the last 14 years as CEO and Chairman of the Board. He is now a member of the company’s Board of Supervisors.

He taught at VŠB-TU Ostrava as an external instructor for ten years. In 1982 he became an associate professor with a thesis entitled “Strategic Management Tools at Třinec Iron and Steel Works”. In 2004 he was named senior lecturer for the department of Industrial Systems Management. Since 2012, he is the dean of the private Business School Ostrava, and is also on scientific boards of VŠB-TU Ostrava and Ostrava University.

He has absolved a number of important foreign internships and certified courses, and holds prestigious awards from the AMA (American Management Association) and MCE (Management Centre Europe) with the right to use the title of CSM – Certified Strategic Manager.

Public activity

Jiří Cienciala is the vice-president of the Confederation of Industry of the Czech Republic for research, development, innovation and education; his membership in the confederation has been suspended for the duration of his government position. He was co-opted into the Confederation’s executive in 2007, and became vice-president in 2011.

In 2008 he received the prestigious title of Manager of the Year.

He is a member of the Czech Republic’s Government Council for Research, Development and Innovation. He was president of the Steel Federation, an industry association, where he continues to work actively. He is head of the Czech-Polish Chamber of Commerce in Ostrava, and is actively involved in the life of the Moravian-Silesian Region.

Interests

He speaks English and Polish fluently. In his free time, he likes to play sports, golf in the summer and skiing in the winter. He is also interested in gamekeeping.
