Helena Válková

Personal Information

Prof. JUDr. Helena Válková, CSc., born 1951 v Chlumec nad Cidlinou. Married, with one son.

Education

Studied at the Law Faculty, Charles University Prague, completed 1974. Habilitated in 1997 in the field of Criminal Law, appointed Professor in 2006.

Professional and Public Activities

From 1975 to 1988 worked at the Criminal Research Institute, from 1989 to 1993 in the Czech Academy of Sciences Institute of the State and the Law.

From 1991 has worked at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University Prague, where at her initiative in 1994 the Association for Social Work Development in Criminal Justice was established, the basis for the later constituted Czech Probation and Mediation Service. Also participated in developing the Department of Criminal Law at the Law Faculty of the West Bohemian University in Plzeň, which she headed until August 2011.

She was the co-founder of the Czech subsidiary of the prestigious legal publishing house C.H.Beck, which she led as Director from 1993 to 2011, and where she still acts as an external advisor and Chairperson of the Editorial Committee of the Právní rozhledy (Legal Insights) journal.

From 2000 to 2004 she was a member of the Criminological Scientific Council of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, where she was involved in the preparation of a number of recommendations and other materials for the instigation of unified European criminal policy (organised crime, prisons, youth crime, alternative punishments, crime prevention and others).

She is a co-founder and Vice-Chairperson of the Czech Criminological Society and a member of the European Society of Criminology.
