Personal information

Jan Fischer was born in Prague in 1951 in a family of mathematical statisticians and insurance mathematicians. His father worked as a scientist for the Institute of Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences, devoting himself to mathematical statistical applications in genetics, breeding and medicine. Jan Fischer is married for the second time and is the father of three children.

Education

He received a diploma in statistics and econometrics from the Faculty of National Economics at the University of Economics in Prague in 1974. He then began working at the Statistical Office, where he worked until the beginning of the 1980s as a researcher of the Research Institute of Social Economic Information (at that time part of the Statistical Office). In 1985, he completed post-graduate studies at the University of Economics and received the title of candidate of science in the field of statistical economics. He held various positions at the Federal Statistical Office until 1990, when he became vice-president of this office. Since the creation of the independent Czech Republic in 1993, he has been vice-president of the Czech Statistical Office.

Professional and public activity

Since the beginning of the 1990s, he headed teams processing the results of parliamentary and municipal elections. He was also in charge of relations with the European Union’s Eurostate statistical office. In the spring of 2001 he worked for a mission of the International Monetary Fund investigating the possibility of building statistical services in East Timor.

From September 2000, he worked as production director for Taylor Nelson Sofres Factum, and from March 2002 until being named president of the Czech Statistical Office, he was head of research facilities of the Faculty of Informatics and Statistics of the University of Economics in Prague.

He was named president of the Czech Statistical Office by the president of the Czech Republic on 24 April 2003, and remained in this position until 2009, when he was named prime minister of the Czech Republic.

From 9 April 2009 until 13 July 2010, he was prime minister of the Czech Republic.

From September 2010, Jan Fischer was vice-president of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in London, until November 2012 when he resigned following his registration as official presidential candidate.

Membership in professional associations

He is a member of a number of prestigious institutions, including the Czech Statistical Society, the International Statistical Institute, the Science Board and the Board of Directors of the University of Economics and the Science Board of J. E. Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem.
