Jana Černochová

Minister of Defence

Jana Černochová was born in Prague. In 1996 she completed a lifelong learning course and passed the final examination in Banking and Monetary Economics at the Faculty of Finance and Accounting of the University of Economics in Prague. In 2009 she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Law at the College of Applied Law in Prague and in 2011 was awarded a master’s degree in International Territorial Studies specialising in International Relations and European Studies at the Metropolitan University in Prague.

Before entering politics she worked in banking. In 1998 she was elected to the Regional Assembly of the City District of Praha 2 and was appointed Deputy Mayor. She has been the Mayor since 2006 (with a two-year break). At various times while serving on the regional assembly of this city district she coordinated fields such as finance, property, crisis management, security, culture, and education, amongst others. During her work on the regional assembly for the city district of Praha 2 she places special emphasis on commemorating history, important places and people connected with the Prague 2 district. She collaborates with the Czechoslovak Legionnaires, the Jewish Community and other associations and memory organisations on projects commemorating the heroes of both world wars and the anti-communist resistance. She was the initiator of War Veterans Day, a regular event that takes place on náměstí Míru in Prague, which took place this year for the seventh time.

Since 2010 she has been a member of the Parliament of the Czech Republic, where she specialises in defence, security and foreign affairs. From 2017 to 2021 she was the chair of the Committee on Defence. She has also worked as the chair of the Subcommittee on War Veterans. In her work as a Member of Parliament she focuses on activities aimed at strengthening the Czech Republic's defence capabilities, modernising the army and ensuring quality service conditions for professional soldiers, soldiers in active reserve, war veterans and members of the security forces. She was actively involved in the creation of the last major amendment to the defence legislation, particularly the amendment to the Professional Soldiers Act and to the new Act on Reserve Soldiers. She advocates the introduction of systemic changes in order to boost the population's readiness for crisis situations and current security threats. She supports the Active Reserve and its development. She also promotes the preservation of the rights of legal bearers of arms, despite efforts towards their disproportionate regulation.

In terms of foreign policy, she focuses particularly on the development of relations between the Czech Republic and the State of Israel, has drafted a number of resolutions of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic in support of this important Middle East partner and is a long-standing member of the relevant inter-parliamentary friendship group. She is a supporter of strong transatlantic ties and the development of relations within the V4 group, with the aim of promoting common interests within the European Union.

She has been a member of the Board of Trustees of Charles University since 2020. She holds a firearms licence and a certified security classification level of “Secret“ (in accordance with Act No. 412/2005 Coll., on the Protection of Classified Information and Security Eligibility) and a NATO SECRET certificate. She speaks Polish, Russian and English. In her spare time she likes diving, shooting sports, military and historical literature and film, enjoys cooking and dining, and drinks good red wines. She has been a member of the Civic Democratic Party since 1997.
