Petr Gazdík

Minister for Education, Youth and Sports

Petr Gazdík was born in Uherské Hradiště. He graduated from the J. A. Comenius Grammar School in Uherský Brod. He subsequently graduated at the Faculty of Education of Masaryk University in Brno, in the field of teaching of general educational subjects (mathematics–geography).

After his studies, he began working as a teacher at the Josef Bublík Primary School in Bánov. He completed his military service with the Castle Guard unit. In 2002 he was elected mayor of Suchá Loz, which he led for two terms. Under his leadership, Suchá Loz gained the title of 2007 Village of the Year in Zlín Region. Since 2010, when he was elected a Member of Parliament of the Czech Republic, he has been working as an unreleased and unpaid deputy mayor for the town. In 2008 he was elected as a representative of Zlín Region for the Mayors and Independents movement (STAN). Here, among other things he chaired the Committee on Agriculture, the Environment and Rural Development. During 2016–2020 he was a councilor for Zlín Region in the area of Education.

In 2010 he was elected a member of Parliament of the Czech Republic, and defended his seat in the following three parliamentary elections. In the Chamber of Deputies, he held the function of chairman of his parliamentary group (TOP 09 and Mayors) and in the following term Deputy Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies. During the previous electoral term he was also a member of the Committee for Science, Education, Youth and Sports or the Election Committee. He also became a member of the Chamber of Deputies’ committee on the Bečva catastrophe and was the rapporteur for its final report.

For four years he was chairman of the Czech Commission for UNESCO

Since 2020 he has also been a member of the think tank “Vzdělávání21” (Education21) at Charles University.

As an external lecturer he is currently teaching regional politics at the Faculty of Social Sciences at Charles University.

He is a co-founder of the MAYORS AND INDEPENDENTS movement and was its Chairman during 2009–2019.

Petr Gazdík is married and has three daughters with his wife Eva: Tereza (born 2003), Barbora (born 2004) and Alžběta (born 2007) and a son Martin (born 2014). His hobbies include scouting.
