Commentary of the Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka on the results of the parliamentary elections in Greece

I would like to congratulate the Syriza party and its leader Alexis Tsipras on the victory in the Greek parliamentary elections and on having been entrusted with the formation of a new government of Greece. I look forward to our cooperation within the framework of the European Union in the interest of supporting the economic growth and employment and enhancing investment and European competitiveness.

I hope that the strong support the Greek citizens have shown to Syriza will bring an end to the social crisis in Greece and result in the renewal of citizens’ trust in the Greek political scene. I also firmly believe that the new government will find a way to confirm the coherence of the eurozone. The victory of Syriza has been, in my opinion, expected and – in the light of the social situation in Greece – expectable. In the elections, the Greek people have expressed their discontent with the cuts and with the deep economic recession, they have done so in a democratic way and their decision has to be respected.

It is important now that Syriza is able to combine its new, more solidarity-based policy with reforms, and that Greece remains in the bailout programme as well as in the Eurozone – which will be by no means easy and will require will to act and willingness to compromise.
