Prime Minister Sobotka: I condemn the terrorist attacks in Brussels

Today’s news of the terrorist attacks in Brussels, which according to the latest available information claimed many lives and injured many, shocks me very much. I am deeply sorry for the innocent victims, and I express my sorrow and solidarity to all those whose loved ones have been killed in the attacks. Just last week we held talks in Brussels with EU leaders regarding the migration crisis, and now the country has become the target of senseless terrorist attacks.  I extend my full support to the Belgian government in its fight against terrorism. I condemn the terrorist attacks, as they are also attacks on the basic values of democracy and freedom, with all European countries share, including the Czech Republic. We must not allow ourselves to be intimidated by terrorists. The perpetrators must be caught and punished.

In view of the extraordinary events in Brussels, I have scheduled a meeting to be held today at the Czech Government Office, which will be attended by the minister of interior, the minister of foreign affairs, the police president and representatives of intelligence services. I would like to discuss the adopted measures, the current security situation in the Czech Republic and other steps that we will need to take in order to ensure the security of our citizens.

Bohuslav Sobotka, Prime Minister of the Czech Republic
