Sobotka met with French Prime Minister Manuel Valls in the Matignon Palace on the second day of a working trip to France. The Czech prime minister was the first foreign guest received by Valls following his recent induction into office.

Their discussion revolved around the intensification of relations between France and the Czech Republic based on the Strategic Partnership Agreement signed in 2008. The premiers vowed to agree to a new action plan that will improve cooperation between municipalities, facilitate the establishment of contacts between young people, and develop collaboration in education, research, and innovations.

Sobotka commented on the meeting with his French counterpart: "The meeting with Prime Minister Valls was a part of the effort of the new Czech Cabinet to improve communication with our European partners. If we want the Czech Republic's national interests to resonate strongly within the European Union, we must continue to deepen relations with other Member States. That is why my today's discussion with the French premier focused on issues soon to be debated at Commission level, where the Czech Republic wants its views to be heard."

Sobotka and Valls also discussed Europe's energy security in view of the current crisis in Ukraine. The Czech prime minister invited his French counterpart for a visit to Prague later this year.

Since taking office, Sobotka has already traveled to Slovakia, Poland, and Germany for bilateral talks.
