Extraordinary meeting of EU foreign ministers with Izrael

The meeting was convened by the Czech Presidency in Brussels for 21 January.

The meeting will be chaired by president of the EU General Affairs and External Relations Council and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic Karel Schwarzenberg and it will also be attended by Secretary General of the Council of the European Union and High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana, and Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy Benita Ferrero-Waldner. Israeli foreign minister Tzipi Livni is also invited.

On Sunday 25 January a similar meeting of foreign ministers of the EU 27 plus Egypt, Turkey, Jordan and the Palestinian National Authority will take place. The time of the press conference regarding this meeting will be specified later.

The Czech Presidency convenes these meetings as a follow-up to the Sunday Summit in Sharm-el-Sheikh and the subsequent meeting in Israel. In this regard, the Czech Presidency feels the need to be transparent and provide information on the conclusions of the Sunday negotiations to the Member States that were not directly involved in these negotiations. The objective of both extraordinary meetings with partners from the Middle-East in Brussels is particularly to find the most effective way to help the citizens of Gaza in their difficult humanitarian situation and clarify role and strategy of the EU in searching for a more stable security situation in the Middle-East.
