Government establishes the office of the Government Commissioner for Roma Minority Affairs and appoints Lucie Fuková as the Commissioner

At a meeting on Wednesday, 21 December 2022, the Government of Petr Fiala decided to create the office of Government Commissioner for Roma Minority Affairs and approved its statute. On the same day, it appointed Lucie Fuková to the post.

The creation of the Commissioner for Roma Community Affairs represents a fulfilment of the Government Resolution of 10 May 2021, which approved the Strategy for Roma Equality, Inclusion and Participation for the period 2021-2030. One of the tasks of the Strategy, which was given to the Office of the Government of the Czech Republic, was precisely the establishment of the office of the Government Commissioner for Roma Affairs, including the professional background for its activities and support. The reason for the creation of this post is that, given the scope of the agenda related to the integration of the Roma minority and its fragmentation among various state administration bodies, it is necessary to allocate a separate function for this agenda.

The Government also decided to appoint Lucie Fuková as Government Commissioner for Roma Minority Affairs with the effect from 21 December 2022. The new commissioner worked, among others, as a Roma adviser at the Pardubice Municipality. She also completed an internship at the European Commission, after which she coordinated the European Year of Equal Opportunities for All under the Office of the Government in 2007. In 2016, she started organisation Klub Barvaľipen, z. s., which brings together Roma students and graduates of secondary schools and universities.

"I want to advocate for effective coordination and communication of integration policies at the national level within individual ministries. I also see it as essential to set up the appropriate steps and tools for implementing the Strategy for Roma Equality, Inclusion and Participation 2021-2030 at the regional level with a positive impact on the social situation of Roma and the potential for societal benefit in general. Last but not least, I consider it important to connect and share good practices of key actors,“ stated Lucie Fuková after her appointment.
