The Government of the Czech Republic welcomed Roberta Metsola, the President of the European Parliament, and the chairs of EP political groups. It was the first event held under the Czech Presidency.

The Conference of Presidents of the European Parliament, led by President Roberta Metsola, visited Prague on Thursday, 16 June 2022. In the Liechtenstein Palace, they gradually met with representatives of the Czech government and Presidents of both chambers of the Czech Parliament.

A visit of the Conference of Presidents of the European Parliament in the presidency country before the start of its presidency is a long-established practice and is pivotal for laying the foundations of successful cooperation in the future,” said Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament.

The main item on the agenda was discussion of the priorities of the Czech Republic’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union. But the topics that will dominate in the European Union during the Czech Presidency were not omitted either. Among them, emphasis was placed on the continuing support and aid to Ukraine, food security, energy supplies, climate objectives, digital transition and economic recovery.

I appreciate the approach of President Metsola to the Czech Presidency. Her recommendations helped us very much in the preparations. The EU Council and the European Parliament are partners in the EU legislative process and so it is crucial for us to share our mutual expectations before the Presidency starts,” said Petr Fiala, Prime Minister of the Czech Republic.

The representatives of the Government of the Czech Republic and of the Conference of Presidents of the European Parliament agreed that, in the current situation, the EU must pursue a single approach to dealing with crises. Representatives of the political groups of the European Parliament promised to support the Czech Presidency in achieving its goals.
