On Friday 21 August 2020, PM Andrej Babiš held talks with the premier of the Free State of Saxony on cooperation in the field of science and research. Together they visited the Regional Research Library, the Technical University in Liberec and the Ještěd national cultural monument.

Prime Minister of the Czech Republic Andrej Babiš held talks in Liberec with Premier of the Free State of Saxony Michael Kretschmer on the form of cooperation in the field of research and development between the Czech Republic and Saxony. They also spoke about measures to stem the spread of coronavirus, the economic impact of the pandemic and cooperation in the region in terms of emergency services and transport infrastructure. The introductory meeting, which was also attended by Deputy PM Karel Havlíček, took place at the Regional Research Library.

"I am very glad that we are meeting again, and we meet relatively often. I think we have very friendly relations and today we spoke once again about cooperation between the Czech Republic and Saxony. We have quite a number of common interests and of course even this library here is historic proof of very good cooperation. Today we spoke about a whole lot of topics, about the coronavirus, about the fact that starting 1 September children in Saxony won't be wearing face masks in schools, that Germany also has a 'traffic light' system. Then there was economic cooperation, the situation in the European automotive industry, the situation in the EU, Belarus, of course we discussed our very important project for fighting cancer, where we also agreed on cooperation," Andrej Babiš said at a press conference, describing the topics of the talks.

At the Technical University in Liberec both politicians examined the nanofibres laboratory. At the same time they attended the signing of a Memorandum between Fraunhofer Gesellschaft and Liberec Technical University. Its goal is to better interconnect basic research, applied research and industry. Fraunhofer Gesellschaft is one of the most important scientific institutions in Germany, which boosts the significance of this cooperation for Czech research bodies.

Before the working meeting, Prime Minister Andrej Babiš paid homage to the victims of the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia in Liberec. Fifty-two years ago Liberec was the second most severely affected city after Prague. Nine people died and 45 were injured. "Today it has been 52 years since the Soviet Union occupied us. Because of that we lost 21 years of freedom and democracy. Now we have free elections, people can say what they want and everyone can live where and how they want. In saying this I cannot help but think with great hope of Belarus," the PM stated.

After the working meeting with the Saxon premier, PM Babiš visited the Liaz Pattern Shop, where he held talks with the company management and inspected the manufacture of components for the automotive, aerospace, energy and foundry industries.
