On Wednesday 12 April 2017, Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka met Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, Chairwoman of the National Assembly of Vietnam. At the Straka Academy, they discussed the further development of mutual relations, including cooperation in the fields of trade and investment, as well as education, security, culture, science and research, and in tourism. They also dealt with the topic of the Vietnamese community living in the Czech Republic.

Prime Minister Sobotka confirmed that the Czech Republic is interested in further developing relations with Vietnam, in both the political and economic spheres. Last year, trade turnover between the Czech Republic and Vietnam reached more than $ 912 million and there is potential for further growth. Investment is also an important part of economic cooperation, with Czech companies having already invested in Vietnam a total of $ 90 million in 34 projects.

During the talks, the Prime Minister was interested in the possibility of involving Czech companies in the modernisation of Vietnam and in building infrastructure there. The Vietnamese minority in the Czech Republic, which is the third largest Vietnamese community in the whole of Europe, could also help.

Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan has come to the Czech Republic at the invitation of Senate Chairman Milan Štěch. The most recent visit of a Vietnamese Chairman to the Czech Republic was by Chairman Truong Tan Sang two years ago, when the two countries commemorated the 65th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations.
