On Wednesday, 27 March 2019 Prime Minister Andrej Babiš met with the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Lebanon Gebran Bassil, on economic cooperation, regional security, the situation in Syria and the future of war refugees.

Prime Minister Babiš met with Lebanese Minister of Foreign Affairs Gebran Bassil and they talked about developing cooperation in the economic and political sectors and on ways to address the security and humanitarian crisis in the Middle East. This meeting is a follow-up to this year’s meeting of the Czech Prime Minister with Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri in February at the EU-LAS Summit in Egypt.

“Lebanese Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil and I were discussing regional security, the situation in Syria and migration. We agreed that the most important thing is to return Syrian migrants to their homeland”, said the Prime Minister after the talks.

Since 2017, the Czech Republic has contributed CZK 40 million to supporting the management of impacts of the refugee crisis in Lebanon. Currently, the Czech Republic supports Lebanon, especially in the health sector through MEDEVAC. According to Prime Minister Babiš, it is essential for our country to work with Lebanon in the future post-war reconstruction of Syria, as well as for the European Union to be able to contribute with a concrete plan for political conflict resolution in the region.

One of the other topics of the meeting was to deepen mutual relations and establish closer, especially economic, cooperation.
