Prime Minister Babiš and Romanian Prime Minister Dăncilă talked about the economic cooperation of both countries, 15 March 2019.
On Friday, 15 March 2019, Prime Minister Andrej Babiš met with the Prime Minister of Romania Viorica Dăncilă in Kramář’s Villa. The joint meeting, also in view of the ongoing Romanian Presidency of the European Council, covered current European issues including Brexit, the preparation of the European budget and migration. The Prime Ministers also discussed trade and investment cooperation.

The joint meeting of the two Prime Ministers was based on a traditional partnership since the First Republic. “Last year we commemorated the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the First Republic. The then Romanian Kingdom was one of the close allies of Czechoslovakia and I am pleased that even today it is our exemplary ally in NATO and a close partner within the EU. We have great mutual relations”, said the Czech Prime Minister at a press conference, who further assured him of the Czech Republic’s continued support for Romania’s accession to the Schengen area.

The Prime Ministers also discussed the economic cooperation between both countries. Romania is the Czech Republic’s largest trading partner in South-eastern Europe. Czech companies also invest in Romania, including in renewable energy production.

The Czech Prime Minister thanked Romania for its presidency of the EU Council and stressed that this was not an easy task with regard to the forthcoming European Parliament elections, the deterioration of the EU’s trade relations with the US and the expected exit of the UK from the EU.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Babiš noted that he expects an open debate on the European economy next week at the European Council. The Prime Minister will work to ensure that support for external trade and the completion of the internal market continue to be the key issues even after the European Parliament elections in May. He also supported the efforts of the Romanian Presidency to make the most of the negotiations on the multiannual financial framework.
