Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka and the Polish Prime Minster Beata Szydlová signed a memorandum on building the Stork II gas pipeline on 6 September 2016.

This north-south gas pipeline is designed to provide potential and fundamentally contribute to the development of natural gas markets in the Central and Eastern Europe, brining increased security in supplies of natural gas and diversifying supply routes.

The Prime Ministers have expressed their continuing political support to the project in the text of the memorandum and their will to cooperate with European and national institutions so that the project could be implemented by the end of 2020.

The STORK II gas pipeline project has been included in 2013 among EU projects of common interest, i.e. projects with cross-border contribution and importance for the entire European Union; as a result this project had been included in the Annex to the European Energy Security Strategy, as a project which should be implemented in mid-term horizon (2017-2020) in order to strengthen energy security of the EU.
