On Thursday, 4 May 2017, Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka met the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Belgium, Charles Michel. The topics of their meetings at the Straka Academy were mainly current European issues, business and scientific cooperation and the international situation.

At the start of the meeting, the prime minister expressed his appreciation of the excellent state of Czech-Belgian relations, and in particular economic and scientific cooperation. On a global scale, Belgium is the Czech Republic’s thirteenth largest trading partner. A further topic of the meeting was the future direction of the European Union and the departure of Great Britain from the EU. They also dealt with collaboration between the V4 countries and those of the Benelux.

Belgian Prime Minister Michel is on his first official visit to the Czech Republic. It is also his first bilateral visit this year outside Belgium’s neighbours. The most recent visit by a Belgian Prime Minister to the Czech Republic was that of Prime Minister Verhofstadt in 2004.
