Prime Minister Sobotka signs EU–Ukraine Association Agreement at European Council
The Spring European Council was dominated by the state of play in Ukraine and Russia’s unacceptable action against this neighbour. Early Friday morning, the political part of the Association Agreement between the European Union and Ukraine was signed, with Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka also one of the signatories. The political part of the Association Agreement will be debated by the Czech Parliament in the near future.
As part of the European Union’s unified position, European leaders approved additions to the list of persons subject to a visa ban and asset freeze, and it was agreed to freeze relations between the Member States and Russia at the highest political level, apart from diplomatic contact, and to cancel the upcoming EU-Russian summit in Sochi.
The grave situation in Ukraine, posing a potential security crisis in Europe, will also be discussed by the National Security Council on Monday 24 March.
Other key topics for the Czech Republic at the meeting of European leaders included industrial competitiveness, stronger economic growth and employment, energy policy and climate protection.
