Prime Minister Sobotka to attend New York ISIL Summit

Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka has accepted an invitation from US President Barack Obama to attend a summit on the Islamic State, terrorism and violent extremism in New York on 29 September 2015. The summit will be held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

“I believe it is extremely important to participate in the New York summit on ISIL. The Islamic State poses a major international security threat which needs to be opposed relentlessly. The Czech Republic is an active member of the counter-ISIL international coalition. If we are to grapple with the migration crisis faced by Europe today, first and foremost we must stabilise the situation in the Middle East, which is impossible without defeating or radically weakening ISIL,” said Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka.

This working trip to New York is Sobotka’s second visit to the US. During his first trip, he held talks with Vice President Joe Biden in the White House, met Madeleine Albright and Czech compatriots, and attended a ceremony unveiling a bust of Václav Havel in the US Congress.
