Representatives of the Government of Petr Fiala met with representatives of the Czech Parliament and chairmen of parliamentary opposition parties at the Hrzánský Palace on Monday, 28 February 2022. The topic of the meeting was the foreign and European policy of the Czech Republic, but mainly the current position of the Government on the military invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation and Czech aid to Ukraine.

The meeting on foreign policy was convened by Prime Minister Petr Fiala before the Russian invasion of Ukraine began. The invitation was accepted by the President of the Senate Miloš Vystrčil, the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Markéta Pekarová Adamová and the Speakers of the parliamentary opposition parties Andrej Babiš and Tomio Okamura. In addition to Prime Minister Petr Fiala, the meeting was also attended by the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Vít Rakušan, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Jan Lipavský, the Minister of Defense Jana Černochová and the Minister for European Affairs Mikuláš Bek. The main topic was the Czech Republic's attitude towards the Russian aggression against Ukraine, the aid provided by the Czech Republic to Ukraine and its citizens, as well as the steps taken in retaliation against the Russian Federation.

I have been saying for a long time that we can be as strong abroad as we are united at home, and I have to say this with great joy, even though it is in the context of tragic events, that the Czech political scene is absolutely united in its attitude towards the Russian aggression and support for Ukraine and its brave struggle. I must say that there was a completely unequivocal position across the political spectrum and there was a consensus on the key issue,” Prime Minister Petr Fiala summarised the course and results of the meeting.

In addition to the main topic, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, politicians also discussed the preparations for the Czech Presidency of the European Union in the second half of this year. The Minister of the Interior, Vít Rakušan, informed about the recent decision to send 50 Czech police officers to the Slovak-Ukrainian border to assist in the registration of persons crossing the state border.

I am glad that today's meeting took place. I would like to thank everyone involved and express my pleasure at the support and clear position of the entire political representation. Today's meeting will be followed by my meeting with President Miloš Zeman on Thursday evening and I trust that all key constitutional officials and all political institutions will take a clear, unified and strong stand, which is very important in these extremely difficult times,” Prime Minister Fiala concluded.
