At a meeting today the government of the Czech Republic discussed the Czech Republic’s proposed candidacy for membership of the European Commission. After discussion by all three coalition parties the government decided to nominate the current Minister for Regional Development, Věra Jourová, for this post. The Czech Republic is now the fourteenth of a total of eighteen EU countries which have put forward their nomination to the European Commission.

“We are pleased that we have agreed with the coalition partners on Věra Jourová and I am sure that we will be sending a high quality and professional candidate with many years of experience to the European Commission. The government has today also given the green light to this coalition agreement. According to the latest information we are the fourteenth country of the European Union to announce the name of its candidate for membership of the European Commission. We have also prematurely fulfilled the agreement made at the extraordinary European Council meeting, when I pledged to representatives of the other member states to announce the name of the Czech candidate by the end of July. In the coming weeks we will be continuing in-depth talks with our European partners regarding a suitable portfolio for the Czech EU commissioner. Our government will strive to acquire one of the economic portfolios our priorities are regional development, transport, industry and the digital economy,” said Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka.
