The Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka signed the documents establishing the Trust Fund for Africa in Valletta today. The Czech Prime Minister attached his signature to the signatures of the other European leaders. The objective of the Fund is to support stability in the region, improve the managed migration and address causes for destabilisation and illegal migration, particularly by the support to economy, safety, development and equal opportunities.

The Fund focuses its assistance in three geographic regions – Sahel and the area of the Chad Lake, the Horn of Africa and the Northern Africa. The Fund currently possesses EUR 1.8 billion plus contributions of the member states. The Czech Republic originally contributed the amount of EUR 600 thousand to the Fund as a foundation country. This morning the countries of the Visegrad Group agreed that each of them would increase its contribution by another EUR 100 thousand. The Czech Republic has been supporting regional development and protection programmes on the long-term basis. This year we have joined the Northern Africa programme with the total financial contribution of EUR 400 thousand and in 2016 we are planning to join the Horn of Africa programme with the financial contribution of EUR 400 thousand.
