The prime ministers of the V4 group discussed the situation in Ukraine and areas of mutual cooperation

The prime ministers and the Swiss President also addressed bilateral relations between the European Union and Switzerland.

Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka praised the work of the Swiss President, Burkhalter, who is also the chairman of the OSCE. “The Ukrainian crisis has shown that we have not only to insist on compliance with international law and to ensure solidarity for the position adopted by the European Union Member States, but also demonstrates the need for a functional international organisation, such as the OSCE, for example,“ said Mr Sobotka after the meeting. His view is that this organisation can play a major role in securing compliance with the peace accords.

Mr Sobotka’s introductory address was on the subject of economic policy and the strengthening of economic relations. He considers that the main priority should be further cooperation in the promotion of innovation, science and research within the framework of joint scientific and research projects which can also focus on supporting industrial production.

The prime ministers of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Poland also discussed the upcoming European Council, due to take place next week, at a joint dinner at Bratislava Castle. Other topics also included the European Structural Funds and the Visegrad patent institute.

Slovakia currently holds the Chair of the Visegrad group.
