Ukraine joins the political agreement about the European Commission monitoring group

Ukraine joins the political agreement about the European Commission monitoring group - opening the way for restoring the supplies of Russian gas to the EU.

At the end of the negotiations late last night, Czech Prime Minister and President of the European Council Mirek Topolánek and Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko declared that Ukraine joins the proposal for an agreement put forward by the Czech Presidency and the European Commission. The agreement spells out the conditions for monitoring the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine to the EU.

A few hours earlier the agreement had been accepted by the Russian Prime Minister, Vladimir Putin, after his negotiations with Mirek Topolánek in Moscow. The Czech Prime Minister expressed his satisfaction that all parties had come to an agreement and pointed out that the technical details about how to restore the supplies of gas should be in place within a few hours.
