Celebrations of the 90th Anniversary of the Battle of Zborov

On Monday, July 2, 2007 Prime Minister Mirek Topolánek of the Czech Republic will attend celebrations of the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Zborov in Ukraine.

Czechoslovak units were deployed in an offensive operation for the first time in the battle of Zborov on July 2, 1917. Even though outnumbered by a better armed enemy, the Czechoslovak brigade fighting as part of the Russian Legions managed to break through the Austro-Hungarian defence lines. Almost after 300 years, Czech and Slovak volunteers fought for the independence of their nation, and the Battle of Zborov has gone down in our history as a breakthrough in the formation of modern Czechoslovak army.
The Prime Minister will attend a memorial ceremony at the Kalinivka cemetery, lay a wreath to the memorial to Czechoslovak Legionnaires and deliver a speech as part of the act of remembrance.
