Prime Minister To Visit Zlatá tretra Track-and-Field Event in Ostrava

Tomorrow, on Wednesday, June 27, 2007, Prime Minister Mirek Topolánek of the Czech Republic will attend the 46th Zlatá tretra (Golden Spikes) athletic meeting in Ostrava-Vítkovice.

A true highlight of this year’s track-and-field event will be the appearance of the legendary long-distance runner Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia who will try to break the current world record in one-hour run at the Ostrava Municipal Stadium. The Ethiopian runner, who is two-times Olympic gold medallist in 10,000-metre run, has also won four world champion titles.

The athletes taking part in this year’s Zlatá tretra meeting include more than 50 world championships and Olympic medallists, 12 Olympic winners from the Athens Olympics, including, among other stars, the best sportswoman in 2006, the pole-vaulter Jelena Insibajeva, the world hammer-throwing champion Ivan Tichon of Belarus and many others.

The Prime Minister will greet the winner of the men’s one-hour run at the finish line and congratulate him on his victory.
