Prime Minister Mirek Topolánek of the Czech Republic today received the visiting First Vice-Premier and the Finance Minister of Ukraine Mykola Azarov.

UkrajinaThe Czech Prime Minister emphasized that the priority of the Czech government was its support for Ukraine’s integration into the European Union and admission into the World Trade Organization. Mirek Topolánek promised assistance in the negotiations with the EU bodies and exchange of information concerning the association process.
The Premier also mentioned Ukraine’s possible support for the candidature of the Czech Republic this coming autumn for the post of a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for 2008, and promised reciprocal Czech support in 2016 when Ukraine will be contending that place.
Their talks also dealt with economic co-operation. Premier Topolánek appreciated the growing trade exchange (registering a 30% growth in 2006), and voiced the Czech Republic’s interest in continued promotion of mutual economic ties, especially in the power sector.
For his part, the Ukrainian Vice-Premier Azarov raised the problem of visa obligations unilaterally applied by the European Union towards Ukraine. Prime Minister Topolánek promised assistance, adding, however, that the final decision lies with the EU authorities.
Both sides agreed on the proximity of the two countries and on the usefulness of fostering political and economic contacts between the Czech Republic and Ukraine.
