Statement by Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolánek

Response by Premier Mirek Topolánek to Jiří Paroubek´s statement that the Czechoslovak Social Democratic Party (ČSSD) may change its view of the (eventual US) radar station after it receives evidence that Iran indeed owns ballistic missiles:

1. We have all grown accustomed to Jiří Paroubek populistically changing his views as suits him best according to the direction of a prevailing political wind.

2. Nevertheless, this particular statement is the worst since his “memorable“ post-election comment about the Victorious February.

3. It also shows that ČSSD is led by a chairman who does not realize at all in what kind of world we really live. If we tarried too long with our preparations for an efficient defence system, waiting for the moment when Iran possesses nuclear weapons and still more sophisticated ballistic missiles than it owns today, this would have fatal consequences. It would markedly weaken our country and our democracy, jeopardizing our future.
