Personal Information

Vlastimil Picek born 25th October 1956 in Turnov. Married to Dagmar Picková, two sons Ondřej and Tomáš.

Education

On completing the Military Academy in Brno in 1981, graduated in 1993 from postgraduate studies at the Czech Technical University in Prague, and in 1997 from the General Staff senior academic course at the Military Academy in Brno.

Career

Since 1975 has served in various military ranks. From 1996 as Head of Czech Army Signals; from 1997 Head of Czech Army Operational and Tactical Command and Control Systems; from 2001 Head of Command and Control Section of the Czech Army General Staff – Security Director for the Ministry of Defence.

2009: Vlastimil Picek promoted to the rank of army general.

2007 to 2012: Head of Czech Army General Staff.

18th September 2012: Appointed first Deputy Minister of Defence.

Vlastimil Picek was Minister of Defence in the government of Petr Nečas from 19th March 2013 to 10th July 2013. Since 10th July 2013 he has been Minister in the government of Jiří Rusnok.

Decorations

Vlastimil Picek is the holder of the following decorations: Czech Minister of Defence’s Cross of Merit, 3rd Class; the Czech Army Medal, 3rd Class; Medal for Services to one’s Country; Medal for Services in the Defence of one’s Country and the Honorary Insignia for Service in Peacekeeping Operations in the Balkans.
