Government resigns, President accepts resignation tendered by prime minister
Having resigned, Jiří Rusnok’s cabinet will govern the country until a new government is formed following elections to the Chamber of Deputies.
At midday on Tuesday, President Miloš Zeman accepted the government’s resignation tendered by prime minister Jiří Rusnok. “Mr President, in accordance with Article 73, paragraph one, of the Constitution of the Czech Republic, I hereby tender to you the resignation of the government of the Czech Republic,” said the resigning prime minister.
President Miloš Zeman accepted the resignation. “Prime Minister, I thank you most sincerely for the work that your government has done and I entrust you and your government with the necessary functions until a new government is appointed, a government which I trust will emerge from free elections. Until that time, I take this opportunity to wish you and your government every success,” said the president.
The President of the Republic named Jiří Rusnok as the prime minister on 25 June, and appointed the government on 10 July. However, Rusnok’s government did not receive the vote of confidence it required from MPs.
The Chamber of Deputies will vote on its dissolution on 20 August. If it approves the resolution to terminate its activities, the president should dissolve the lower house and declare parliamentary elections within 60 days. Preliminary estimates indicate that elections could be held in October.
