Daniel Herman

Personal details


Mgr. Daniel Herman was born on 28 April 1963 in České Budějovice.

Education

In 1984, he started a course of studies at the St. Cyril and Methodius Theological Faculty of Charles University in Litoměřice and was ordained a priest in the summer of 1989.

Professional and public activity

After having completed internships in Germany and the USA, he worked as the spokesman for the Czech Bishops’ Conference from 1996 until 2005.

Between 2005 and 2007, he worked on the crisis helpline attached to the Police Presidium of the Czech Republic. In 2007, he asked the pope that he be released him from his spiritual commitments (laicisation), a request which was granted.

In the civil sector, he worked for the Ministry of the Interior, as Head of the Information Office at the Ministry of Culture and as Head of the Office of Prof. Jan Švejnar.

In 2010, he was elected Director of the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes from among ten candidates. He was recalled from the office of Director by the Council of the ISTR in the spring of 2013.

After having been recalled from office, he joined the KDU-ČSL (Christian and Democratic Union – Czechoslovak People’s Party) and worked as a spokesman for the party and its senate group. He ran for office in Prague as the leader of the KDU-ČSL in elections to the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic in October 2013 and was elected as a Member of Parliament.
