Nuclear Security Summit (NSS)

The Nuclear Security Summit is an event held to deal with the threat of nuclear terrorism and the need to secure nuclear material and prevent it from falling into the hands of terrorists. The aim of the summit is to strengthen commitments made by countries to nuclear safety and to enforce measures aimed at preventing acts of nuclear terrorism. The plan to host the first Nuclear Security Summit was announced by President Obama during a speech delivered in Prague in 2009. Subsequently, the plan was formally confirmed at a G8 summit held in L'Aquila, Italy in July of the same year. The list of invitees includes delegates from 53 countries and four international organizations who form a representative assembly of all nations that actively use nuclear materials.
