Premier Sobotka Emphasizes the Importance of Nuclear Power for the Czech Republic

On 16 June 2014, Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka attended the European Nuclear Energy Forum held in Bratislava. At the ninth plenary meeting, Sobotka, his Slovak counterpart Robert Fico, and nuclear energy specialists debated security issues, energy sector investments, and the long-term management and disposal of used nuclear fuel.

"The Czech government has made it clear that we will continue to develop nuclear energy in the Czech Republic. To make qualified decisions, however, we need additional information. Particularly, we need to determine our approach to the future development of the energy sector in terms of optimizing overall costs and in the context of our other strategic and security interests."

"Nuclear energy is an integral part of the Czech Republic's energy mix. We will seek ways and solutions, both technical and political and both at home and in the European context, to replace base-load coal-fired power plants at the end of their service life with low-emission facilities with a view to minimizing adverse environmental impact based on such principles as cost efficiency and technological neutrality."
