Prime Minister’s statement on the death of Sir Nicholas Winton

News of the death of Sir Nicholas Winton, who, on the eve of the Second World War, saved 669 Czechoslovak children from Nazi persecution and almost certain death, must have been felt by everyone in the Czech Republic. While this is not a particularly high number of saved children, what makes his feat so extraordinary is the dedication and compassion with which he embraced – in a seemingly hopeless situation and at a frightening time – the rescue of others, and doing so, at that, in a country in which he was a complete stranger. For me, Nicholas Winton is a true role model of humanity, extreme modesty and immense civic courage.
