The Prague Post: EC anti-Semitism coordinator visits Prague

Czech Foreign Minister Lubomír Zaorálek met with Katharina von Schnurbein, the European Commission coordinator on combating anti-Semitism, in Prague.

Zaorálek expressed his concerns about rising xenophobia. “I am very concerned about abuses not only against the Jewish community, but also toward other minorities in Europe and the Czech Republic. However, I believe that the Czech Republic is now strong, and we are equipped to confront this situation and stop anti-Semitism,” Zaorálek (Social Democrats, ČSSD) said in a statement after the meeting.

Von Schnurbein was appointed to her role Dec. 1, 2015, and this meeting was her first with members of international institutions and partners from other countries. Czech Human Rights Minister Jiří Dienstbier also attended the meeting.  

Zaorálek urged people not to forget history. “We must keep the past in mind; we must prevent it from repeating,” Zaorálek said, referring to the lessons of the Holocaust.

Zaorálek was also critical of the extremist right-wing website that published hacked e-mails from Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka (ČSSD). He said the server had also published a list concerning students of Jewish schools, and that he will be taking the issue up with others in the Czech government and also his counterparts abroad.

Von Schnurbein said that anti-Semitism spreading over the Internet is an issue she plans to confront with the help of international organizations.

“In recent years we have been witnessing a worrying increase in manifestations of anti-Semitism, especially after the murderous attacks in Toulouse, Brussels, Paris and Copenhagen. Local authorities are recording a dramatic rise in anti-Semitic incidents in recent months,” Von Schnurbein said.
