Prime Minister Sobotka and Minister of Foreign Affairs Zaorálek Attended the Funeral of Shimon Peres

On 30 September 2016, the Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka and the Minister of Foreign Affairs Lubomír Zaorálek attended the funeral of a former Israeli president, Shimon Peres.

The ceremony was held in the Mount Herzl National Cemetery, Jerusalem – home to the Israel´s soldiers and national leaders. The prominent representatives of countries from all over the world attended the ceremony.   

The Prime Minister Sobotka stated: “The farewell to Shimon Peres, a great statesman of Israel, in the Mount Herzl National Cemetery was impressive and dignified. The performance of his children was very personal and emotional”.

Shimon Peres was the 9th president of the State of Israel from 2007 to 2014 when he was substituted by the current president, Re'uven Rivlin. Shimon Peres belonged to great personalities of the Israeli politics and also to the generation of founders of the State of Israel.

There are above standard relationships between the Czech Republic and Israel. Israel is a strategic partner of the Czech Republic in the Middle East region and these close and friendly relationships are proven by regular Czech-Israeli intergovernmental discussions. The last (4th) negotiation was held in Jerusalem this May.
