The Mayor of Vienna Michael Häupl receives from the hand of Prime Minister Sobotka a medal of Karel Kramář

On Thursday 8 December 2016 Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka awarded a commemorative medal of Karel Kramář to the Mayor of the city of Vienna, Michael Häuplin, in the Kramář Villa. The prime Minister thus granted Michael Häupl a token of appreciation for the long-term prime maintenance of good Czech-Austrian relations.

Michael Häupl

Michael Häupl was born on 14 September 1949. Since 1994 he has been the Mayor of the capital city of Austria, Vienna. He is a member of the Austrian Social Democratic Party. He studied biology and zoology at the University of Vienna. In the years 1975 to 1983 he was an academic assistant in the Viennese Natural Science Museum. From 1975 to 1978, he was a chairman of the Austrian Socialist students, student organization SPÖ. Between the years of 1983-1988 he was a member of the Vienna City Council and from 1988 to 1994 an Executive Councillor for sport and the environment. In 2004, Michael Häupl was elected chairman of the Council of European Municipalities and Regions. On 7 November 1994 he had become the Mayor of Vienna and he holds the post to this day.

The Karel Kramář medal

The Karel Kramář medal is awarded by the Prime Minister for outstanding services in the restoration of democracy and human rights and freedom. The commemorative medal was created on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the establishment of the first Czechoslovak Government and named after the first Czechoslovak Prime Minister, Karel Kramář. The draft of the medal design was prepared by Jiří Fidler and Jan Novák and the artistic finish produced by the Czech renowned painter, Jiří Žáček.
