Prime Minister Sobotka met with Maltese Prime Minister Muscat to discuss Brexit, the EU summit in Rome and the future of the EU

On Tuesday 28 February 2017, Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka met in the Kramar villa with the prime minister of the Maltese Republic, Joseph Muscat. The main topics of the meeting were current European issues, Brexit and preparations for the March European Council meeting and the summit in Rome.

Today the prime ministers of the two countries also discussed the agenda for the March meeting of the European Council, which will be dominated by EU internal security and defence matters and further progress in completing the EU single market. They also addressed preparations for the anniversary summit in Rome, which will be held to mark the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the signature of the Treaties of Rome. According to Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka, it is important that, while in Rome, European leaders set out a clear visions and priorities for the EU to address in the upcoming months.

The Czech and Maltese prime ministers also discussed Brexit, their national priorities and common negotiating position within the EU.

Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka informed the Prime Minister Muscat of the Maltese Republic, of the meeting of the leaders of the Visegrad group, which takes place on Thursday and where the main topic of the meeting will be the problem of dual quality foods. The V4 countries have been warning of this problem for many years now and have requested that the European Commission devote greater attention to this issue than has previously been the case.

The last official visit by a Maltese prime minister to the CR took place in 2008.
