Prime Minister Sobotka at the Globsec security forum: We need united EU that will ensure our prosperity and security

Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka delivered a speech at the Globsec international security forum, held on Sunday 28 May 2017 in Bratislava. Together with the Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and the President of the European Council Donald Tusk, he participated in a discussion on the “European (Dis)Union?”. Before the panel, he also met with the European Council President Tusk to talk about, among other, the future of the European Union.

At the conference, Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka emphasized that the European Union has been facing a number of complex situations in the past years and that now it is important to maintain the European unity and trust among the Union members. In his opinion, it is also of utmost importance to build the citizens’ trust in the institutions and their functioning, trust in Europe and in the European integration.

According to the Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka, the Union should be active wherever the individual member states cannot act, particularly in ensuring prosperity, guaranteeing a living standard for citizens and ensuring security.

In the discussions with the President of the European Council Donald Tusk, Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka talked about the future path of the European Union or about the Brexit. 

This year’s edition of the Globsec three-day international forum is focused on issues related to transatlantic cooperation, the critical situation in the Middle East and on fight against terrorism. It was also attended by the Slovak President Andrej Kiska, Polish President Andrzej Duda, the President of the European Council Donald Tusk, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico or the Chairman of the NATO Military Committee, General Petr Pavel.
